Careers
HVAC Journeyman
Position Overview
The College of St. Joseph the Worker invites a faithful, licensed HVAC Journeyman Mechanic to answer a unique lay vocation. As a Journeyman Mechanic within our in-house trade framework, you are not merely an employee executing service tickets and equipment installations. You are an instrument of pastoral and vocational formation. Leading student apprentices on active residential restoration and commercial jobsites across the Upper Ohio Valley, you will model the technical excellence, human virtue, and quiet humility of St. Joseph, transforming the physical city while cultivating the souls of the students under your care.
1. Formational Mentorship
Teaching the Craft: Patiently instruct student apprentices in the technical arc of the HVACR trade, breaking down the why behind complex tasks—from thermodynamic principles and electrical diagnostics to the geometry of sheet metal fabrication.
Authentic Evaluation: Actively monitor and sign off on field competencies for Apprenticeship Ohio requirements. Form students to take holy pride in the hidden aspects of their work, recognizing that God sees the craftsmanship behind the drywall and inside the plenum.
Stewardship of Material: Model absolute justice and care in the handling of tools, vehicles, and materials, treating all physical resources as goods entrusted to us for the building up of the Kingdom.
2. Advanced Mechanical Execution
Independently troubleshoot, service, and install residential and commercial heating, ventilation, and cooling systems (including high-efficiency gas furnaces, heat pumps, and ductless systems).
Execute all refrigeration recovery, charging, and line-set brazing to the highest industry benchmarks, ensuring zero shortcutting.
: Enforce strict adherence to safety protocols and local mechanical and fuel gas codes, framing compliance not as bureaucratic burden, but as an essential duty of care and safety for our neighbors.
Qualifications & Experience
Required Spiritual & Technical Attributes:
Ecclesial Alignment: A practicing Catholic in full communion with the Church, possessing a joyful heart for the New Evangelization and a deep love for the lay vocation of the Christian craftsman.
Trade Licensure: A valid HVAC Journeyman Credential (Ohio, West Virginia, or a reciprocated state).
Professional Depth: 4+ years of field experience in HVAC installation, maintenance, and complex troubleshooting.
Certifications: EPA Section 608 Universal Certification.
Logistics: Valid driver’s license with a clean record, ready to operate and maintain a company service vehicle with reverence and order.
Preferred:
Patience and an aptitude for teaching, with past experience guiding apprentices, youth groups, or parish ministries.
Familiarity with modern inverter-driven heat pumps and communicating control systems.
Physical Requirements & Working Conditions
Ability to lift up to 50 lbs, climb extension ladders, and labor cheerfully in unconditioned or restrictive spaces (attics, crawlspaces, rooftops) during peak seasons, uniting daily physical trials to the Cross of Christ.
